Why does OneCare request a user to “Block or Allow” my application before it can be used?

In most cases, the Windows Live OneCare Firewall auto-allows application binaries that are digitally signed by a trusted root authority*, so software providers are strongly recommended to have their application binaries digitally signed. If you have already signed your binaries and your issue with the OneCare Firewall remains unresolved, please contact the OneCare ISV Help Center.

*The current version of Windows Live OneCare auto-accepts all digitally signed binaries. Please be aware that this policy is subject to change at our discretion and without notice.

How do I configure ports in Windows Live OneCare?

Windows Live OneCare Firewall is designed to block network traffic without explicit approval from the user. If your applications traffic is being blocked by the OneCare Firewall, please provide your customers with a help article or FAQ that outlines how to open the appropriate ports and protocols to enable access through the Firewall*.

*Please note that the mechanism to configure the Firewall is subject to change at our discretion.

If your application is not working with the OneCare Firewall turned ON, and the issue cannot be resolved with a Firewall configuration, please follow these steps:

  1. Please confirm that the issue is actually related to the OneCare Firewall:
    • Close all programs except Windows Live OneCare and your application.
    • Turn off the OneCare Firewall.
    • Does the issue remain?
    • Turn the Firewall back ON.
  2. If the issue persists, please follow these steps:
    • Close all programs except Windows Live OneCare and your application.
    • Configure the Firewall with the appropriate ports and protocols for your application.
    • Confirm the issue still exists.
    • Turn on detailed logging.
    • Reboot your machine.
    • Only run Windows Live OneCare and your application.
    • Try the scenario that is not working.
    • If the scenario failed, generate detailed logs.
    • Contact Windows Live OneCare technical support with the information you collected.

Why is my application incompatible with Windows Live OneCare?

Certain security applications may have compatibility issues with Windows Live OneCare due to the nature of the application behaviors.

Microsoft recommends that incompatible security applications be uninstalled or disabled by the user before installing OneCare, giving the user the choice as to which security solution they would like to use.

Our general approach with regard to incompatible security applications is to ask the user to uninstall or disable them before installing OneCare. This recommendation is based on:

  1. Application compatibility issues with security related applications are typical due to the nature of the application behaviors
  2. End-users ultimately having the choice as to which solution you they choose
Our recommendation is that both Windows Live OneCare and the application you have created detect one another, and inform users that these are incompatible applications, allowing users the choice to select one application.

Note: A small number of security applications may run in conjunction with Windows Live OneCare. Please feel free to investigate the possibility of your application working in tandem with OneCare.

Why is my application being designated as a potential risk by: Windows Live OneCare Anti-Spyware, Antivirus or Malicious software removal tool?

Why is Windows Live OneCare designating my application as a potential risk since I have updated it?

If you have recently updated the behavior of your product and would like it reclassified, please contact our research division with your concerns.

To begin the process of resolution, please open a claim by completing the Vendor Dispute Form.

Why am I still being flagged by Windows Live OneCare when my application binaries have been signed?

It has been determined that your application may compromise a user’s privacy or damage a user’s machine.

Please note that these decisions are based upon the characteristics of the programs we analyzed, our signature criteria, and our detection technology as of the date of the analysis. These decisions are subject to change if alterations are made to your programs or as our signature criteria and/or detection technology evolves.

We would be happy to revisit the classification in the event that you update or change the behavior of these programs to address the issues raised by the criteria categories above. To re-initiate an investigation, you will need to complete the Vendor Dispute Form.

In re-submitting any program, please state under "Reason for disputing the listings" the date of your last submission, your reason for re-submitting, and how the program has changed since your last submission.

My application is allowed through the Windows Live OneCare Firewall; why is my application being flagged as “Unknown” by OneCare Anti-Spyware?

By default Windows Live OneCare Anti-Spyware will not notify a user if an application is designated as “unknown”. Only advanced members of SpyNet or those who have configured OneCare Anti-Spyware to notify them of an application designated as “unknown” will receive a notification. End-users ultimately have control over how an application designated as “unknown” is handled by OneCare Anti-Spyware.

However, if you believe Windows Live OneCare Anti-Spyware is improperly labeling your application we would be happy to investigate. Please submit a claim using the OneCare Anti-Spyware Vendor Dispute Form.
