Welcome to Windows Live OneCare
Like security for your home, keeping up on your computer's security is an ongoing task. New threats always appear, and there is always more that you can do to improve your protection. The good news is that Windows Live OneCare is on the job, committed to helping you make — and keep — your computer as secure, up-to-date, and healthy as it needs to be.
Windows Live OneCare helps take care of your computer in three ways:
- Protects your computer with Antivirus and Firewall that is self-updating and always on.
- Maintains your computer with regular Tune-ups that automate the tedious tasks and help you remember the important ones.
- Preserves your important files with Backup and Restore.
Here are some of the tasks that Windows Live OneCare does for you:
Antivirus protection is a very important tool in your security arsenal. A good antivirus program checks files as you open them, download them, or as other programs try to use them. Windows Live OneCare Antivirus provides real-time antivirus monitoring as well as on-demand virus scanning of your computer and file system. Automatic updates of virus definition files help you stay a step ahead of the virus writers.
A firewall is like a gate that sits between your computer and the Internet, helping to make sure that only the right connections are allowed. Windows Live OneCare Firewall works in both directions — keeping the bad guys out while helping to make sure that only good programs can connect from your computer to the outside world.
Backup helps protect your important files in case any of your other security measures fail, or in case there is another kind of failure unrelated to security (such as a hard disk crash). The Windows Live OneCare Backup Wizard makes it easy to keep track of what files are in your backup, and which files need backing up. An automated task alerts you when your backup is out-of-date — or you can back up your files automatically if you have an external hard drive.
Should you ever need to restore your files, the Restore Wizard makes it easy to restore all your files or just one.
Windows Live OneCare Tune-up runs automatically to help manage your computer's security and performance. It tells you if you have imporant files that need backing up, or if there are important updates from Microsoft that aren't yet installed on your computer. After Tune-up is complete, the Tune-up Report gives you a quick summary of what was found and fixed.
When you are connected to the Internet, Windows Live OneCare updates itself automatically with new or changed virus definitions, changes to the Firewall policy, and updates to the program itself. If you're concerned about a new virus, you can also check for updates manually by clicking a single link.
When there’s an urgent threat to your computer, Windows Live OneCare sends an Advisory straight to your desktop. The Advisory might contain simple steps that you can take to guard against the threat, or a link to newly-released security updates that you can install immediately.
